Churubusco, Indiana—affectionately nicknamed “Turtle Town, U.S.A.”—is a small rural community in Whitley County, about 15 minutes north of Fort Wayne. With a population of around 1,870, it offers a close-knit atmosphere and a blend of historic charm and modern small-town living. The town’s name dates back to 1847, when residents chose to honor the Battle of Churubusco in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Today, Churubusco is known for its local legend of the “Beast of Busco,” a giant turtle said to inhabit nearby Fulk Lake, which has become a quirky part of its identity. Beyond folklore, the town features family-friendly neighborhoods, community events, and access to outdoor recreation, making it a distinctive and welcoming place in northeastern Indiana.
